Audience listening in rapt attention to Nishan Duriappah

The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) welcomed Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah on 30 November. It was an unprecedented event for our Chamber, where a community stakeholder of such prominence was honored and felicitated.

In his welcome remarks, ICCC President Ripudaman Singh Dhillon, enthusiastically said, “I am proud that the program to honor Chief Duraiappajh is happening under my leadership and with the complete support of my colleagues on the board.”

Emphasizing the initiatives that the Peel Regional Police Chief has launched, Ripudaman said, “Some of the initiatives that the Police Chief has launched are an indication of his intuitive understanding of the community’s needs. A good example is the adoption of the Community Safety and Well-Being framework and establishment of a CSWB Bureau in the Peel region to modernize traditional community policing.”

He said businesses succeed when the environment is conducive for growth. For businesses, one of the most significant aspects of the business environment is stability and security. The presence of the law enforcement agency — the police — is vital in maintaining a balance that encourages businesses to take the necessary risks to grow and thereby contribute to the fabric of society.

Ripudaman further said that in a multicultural society such as ours, the relationship between the law enforcement agency and local businesses is of critical importance. This is especially relevant for local businesses that are minority-owned and operated.

“Going forward, we as a Chamber will be working closely with the Peel Regional Police and be a bridge between the law enforcement agency and the small businesses in the region,” he said.

The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce organized a felicitation program to honor Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton. The program witnessed participation from Brampton-based members of the ICCC.

In his welcome remarks, ICCC President, Ripudaman Singh Dhillon said, “Mayor Brown doesn’t need an introduction. He is as much as Indo-Canadian as any person in this room this evening. His connection to India is perhaps stronger than many of us. He has been to India over two dozen times. He has a deep understanding of India’s cultural, political, economics, and its varied society. As the secretary of the Canada — India Parliamentary Association, Mayor Brown, when he was a Member of Parliament, helped in giving proper direction to Canada — India ties. In addition, he has a thorough and deep understanding of the dynamics of the Indo-Canadian community and its role in the shaping of the Canadian mainstream.”

He added Mayor Brown’s association with our Chamber dates back to at least 15 years and more. “I have been told that he was a Master of Ceremonies at one of our important dinners where former Prime Minister Stephen Harper was the chief guest.”

Ripudaman outlined the three specific areas of collaboration between the ICCC and the City of Brampton.

The ICCC Winter Small Business Expo at the City of Brampton, where we will promote local Brampton-based businesses. Brampton City Hall will be an ideal location for this day-long event to be held between January and March 2022.

The Cleantech Mission to India in April 2022 in collaboration with Toronto Business Development Corporation. City of Brampton should come on board as a sponsor for this mission. Mayor Brown should lead the delegation.

Mayor Brown should help ICCC in relocating to the City of Brampton.

Launch of ICCC’s Startup Initiative

The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) and in collaboration with BRTSIF organized a virtual meeting between Indian startups and Canadian investors and service providers on Sunday 28 November 2021.

This 90-minute virtual event saw the participation of six startups from India. Each of the startups discussed their needs including guidance in the following spheres:

Banking and supply of capital
Mentorship
Immigration (business visas)
Help to set up a business
General business help

BRTSIF is a foundation set up by Bombay Stock Exchange Institute Ltd. and BIL Ryerson Futures Pvt. Ltd. to promote startups and support the government of India’s vision for entrepreneurship development and innovation culture.

Apoorva Srivastava, the Consul General of India in Toronto, and Hon. Nina Tangri, Ontario’s Associate Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction also participated in the program.

Sanjay Kulkarni, ICCC’s Director of Strategy and Startups organized the program.

Nominated Directors

The Board of Directors of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce has appointed two nominated Directors on the board. They are Sheelu Sharma and Vipin Gupta.

Sheelu Sharma is Senior Manager at Laksh Law Professional Corporation, a law firm dealing with Immigration, real estate, and civil litigation. Her global experience includes working at the consulate general of India in Dubai and being the Director of Falcon Marketing and Management Consultancies in Dubai and Falcon trading company at Sharjah. Sheelu has pursued fashion designing, modeling, and acting, and has been involved in social event planning. Since then, she has actively contributed to various social and cultural welfare activities through non-profit organizations.

Vipin Gupta is an accomplished and result-driven banking professional with over 17 years of experience in Global Trade Finance, FI, Corporate & Commercial Banking, Sales & Marketing, and Product & Process management. He is responsible for managing the Global Trade Finance business for ICICI Bank Canada including structuring customized solutions to service global and domestic requirements of North American, Indian and foreign companies, developing and maintaining strategic relationships and alliances with Global Corporates, SMEs, industry associations, and trade agencies, promoting and developing Trade & Investment business in Canada-India corridor. Mr. Gupta has vast experience in the financial services industry handling the Indian subcontinent and North American markets.
